  • GREGOR SCHNEIDER in DUESSELDORF, Germany

    IT?S ALL RHEYDT
PREMIERE OF THE VIDEO WORK, IT?S ALL REYDT, AND ARTIST?S TALK WITH GREGOR SCHNEIDER AND LUDWIG SEYFARTH

    Tuesday, 24th May 2016, 7 p.m.

"Every autumn in Kolkata in West Bengal, the Durga Purja Festival, one of the largest Indian festivals, takes place to honour the goddess, Durga. Over a period of ten days traditional altars and stages are erected.
In 2011, with financial support from the local Goethe Institute, Gregor Schneider created an unusual temple structure with statues of the goddess, which was included in the festive rituals. The model for his structure was a section of the street, and the cellar of his famous Haus u r in Mönchengladbach-Reydt.
The section of the street, constructed in bamboo, wood and loam, was reproduced at an angle of 90 degrees, and projected 30 metres skywards. Four million pilgrims streamed through a hole in the street into the similarly tilted cellar in which religious ceremonies were consummated. The high point of the festival was a procession through the city during which the statues of the goddess and parts of the street and cellar were symbolically taken leave of in the river. The day after, Schneider pulled all the materials out of the water. These were to be brought to the Karlskirche in Kassel at the invitation of the evangelical regional church in Kurhessen-Waldeck during the documenta d(13), where a religious ceremony was to be celebrated. This plan was blocked by documenta d(13), who only allowed their own projects to take place in public city spaces during this time.
The documentary film, It?s all Rheydt, will be presented for the first time. The stir-provoking video and Schneider?s works in the exhibition will be discussed by Gregor Schneider and Ludwig Seyfarth."
